chronicle, written by the Syriac Orthodox Patriarch Michael (1126-1199).
The codex unicus from 1598, along with remarks made by scribes
and by the author himself, is used to reconstruct the original layout of
the chronicle. The study compares the chronicle with works that share
its form and sources to reveal Michael’s intentions, particularly the
(lost) chronicles by Jacob of Edessa (633-708), Patriarch Dionysius of
Tel-Mahre (772-834) and the chronicle by Maphrian Bar 'Ebroyo
(1226-1286). Michael studied the history of the world throughout
his entire adult life. There is hardly any other medieval Christian
chronicler in the West or East who reflected on his method to such an
extent. The result was an intricate historical argument as part of the
historico-theological disputes of his time. Michael documented a history
in which the Suryoye had a place rooted in the secular empires of
the Ancient Near East, in their Patriarchal succession and in the
heavenly kingdom of the Anointed One. | Aggiungi al Carrello |

scholars, on the Ukrainian-Canadian Metropolitan Maxim Hermaniuk and the
Ukrainian Greco-Catholic Church during the Second Vatican Council. A
number of essays describe the historical context of the Ukrainian
Greco-Catholic Church during and after the Council. Other essays focus
on Met. Hermaniuk’s contributions during the Council, from his speeches
on episcopal collegiality, ecumenism and the importance of the Eastern
Christian Churches, to his work on the various conciliar commissions.
Concluding sections of the volume then assess Hermaniuk’s efforts to
promote the reception of the Council in his church. These essays
critically engage and comment upon The Second Vatican Council Diaries
of Met. Maxim Hermaniuk, C.Ss.R. (1960-1965), Eastern Christian
Studies 15 (Leuven: Peeters, 2012). Two appendices include Met.
Hermaniuk’s commentary on Orientalium ecclesiarum, plus an essay on the

of the Archangel Gabriel at Naqlun in the Fayyum province in Egypt by
focusing on the hagiographical cycle of Saint Aur, the presumed founder
of its church. It presents the edition and translation, with extensive
commentaries, of six previously unedited texts, all preserved in Middle
Arabic. The author argues that the literary tradition around the
monastery of Naqlun evolved in about the eleventh century, a period in
which the monastery experienced a revival. The texts recall the memory
of great saints from the past, among whom Saint Antony, and convey a new
view of the Christian landscape of this region. | Aggiungi al Carrello |

Ethiopian catechesis with liturgical comments, and to the Palestinian
Typicon; from Byzantine vesting rituals to the rite of marriage in the
South-Slavic tradition, and to the fifteenth-century Archbishop Symeon of

to Catholic veneration of Russian saints, and to the American Orthodox
monastery of New Skete; and from the interactive web 2.0 to Robert Taft

thinker Vladimir Solov'ev (1853-1900) about divine-humanity, the term he
used to express the patristic doctrine of deification. The first chapter
examines the theme of deification in the patristic tradition and shows
that he himself was extremely familiar with the writings of the Church
Fathers and the doctrinal teachings of the early Church Councils. The
following three chapters are devoted to specific works of Solov'ev which
are analysed in detail, Lectures on Divine Humanity, The
Spiritual Foundations of Life; and The Justification of the
Good. Of these, the latter two have, to date, received little
extended scholarly study. The over-arching thrust of this work is that
Solov'ev's concept of deification started as a reflection of the
mystical and cosmic expressions of deification characteristic of the
late Greek patristic period but develops so to be expressed in the
western terminology of grace and focuses on the active implementation of
deification in the world, taking the teaching out of its original
monastic context. Chapter Two reveals the significant impact of Maximus
the Confessor on Solov'ev's thought and identifies the dyothelite
Christological model which Maximus develops from the dogmatic definition
of the Council of Chalcedon as crucial hermeneutical principle in
Solov'ev's thought. Chapter Three shows the development of Solov'ev's
teaching about deification, examining how it expands to embrace
different models of deification, adopting western as well as eastern
theological approaches and finding its centre in the life of the Church.
Finally, Chapter Four shows how Solov'ev's deepening understanding of
the western approach to deification through the language of grace is
combined with an eastern understanding of human anthropology, enabling
him to integrate realistic and moral approaches to deification, and
address the whole range of human experience in terms of divine union and
the Kingdom of God. | Aggiungi al Carrello |

influence of several hands: Judaic, Egyptian, and Syrian. This book
investigates the influence of Syrian Christianity upon the trajectory of
Ethiopian Christianity, proposing that many of the so-called 'Judaic'
practices may have arisen through interaction with Judeo-Christian
Syriac Christianity, rather than from an Old Testament context,
exploring Ethiopic and Syrian literary links using Ge'ez, Amharic and
Syriac sources to show how Syrian and Ethiopic traditions relate. The
symbolic motifs of the Ark and the Cross, as well as the perception of
Paradise are explored in Ethiopic hymnody or Deggwa of St Yared,
the andemta Bible commentaries, and the national epic, the
Kebrä Nägäst, compared with Syriac works of the fourth century
Syriac theologian-poet Ephrem, his later devotee Jacob of Serugh, and
the earlier Syriac Odes to Solomon. The material common to
Ethiopic and Syriac literature demonstrates the complexity of the
Judeo-Christian thought-worlds from which they derived, implying more
nuanced influences than have previously been postulated. | Aggiungi al Carrello |

the current state of Syriac studies more broadly. Although most of the
papers in the volume focus on the late antique heyday of Syriac
Christianity, several papers contribute to the study of other, related
fields, including Islamic studies and Middle Eastern anthropology. The
blossoming of Syriac studies beyond church history and Semitic philology
can be attributed to a wider recognition of the Syriac language and
culture as a bridge linking (and fostering encounters between) Rome
and Persia, Byzantium and Baghdad, and Christianity and Islam. | Aggiungi al Carrello |

the sixteenth to early nineteenth centuries. What we have, are
manuscripts written by mostly clerical scribes for mostly clerical
readers. There is much that suggests, however, that these texts
functioned in a much wider circle than merely that of the learned.
This study takes the scribal production of texts, from the Holy
Scriptures to the first traces of popular writing, as its main source to
analyze the major changes that took place in the Church of the East in
the period. The most important of these was the introduction of Western
Catholicism, which ultimately led to the creation of two separate
hierarchies, today's Chaldean Church and the Assyrian Church of the
East. How this community dealt with these monumental changes, how that
affected everything from the production of texts to the fabric of
society as a whole, and how that contributes to our understanding of
this Church's modern day off-shoots, is the topic of this study. | Aggiungi al Carrello |

topical division: to analyze Eastern monasticism's unique place in the
life transforming journey to theosis; Eastern monasticism's
hospitality and mutual encounters with culture; and Eastern and Western
monasticism's hospitality to Christian and non-Christian religions,
including Buddhism, Hinduism and Islam (even though Islam does not have
any monastic institution, its adherents have been historically in dialogue
with Christian monastics and have the potential to achieve a spiritual
affinity with monks of other religious traditions). The three parts of the
volume share one unifying argument: monasticism's special call to
spiritually symbiotic relationship or impact on the very
socio-politic-historic structures of reality. The topics are explored from
historical, theological, and literary standpoints. The volume's overall
intention is to help make monastic ecumenical engagement or its potential
for inter-faith dialogue better known, appreciated, and relevant within

How might exchanges among Christians
in geographic areas where different expressions of Christianity developed
in the ancient Near and Middle East have been determining factors in the
evolution of specific Churches? Encounters among Christians during Late
Antiquity and the Middle Ages resulted in fertile adaptations and
enrichments leading, through mutations and cross-influences, to the
emergence of new identities. Such interculturality provides a response to
the challenges of the dominating Byzantine, Persian, and Arabic cultures,
as expressed through intellectual currents, artistic influences, and
constructions of traditions.
The selected articles presented here, several updated by their authors, have
marked the field of Eastern Christian studies in recent decades. The
comparative approach enables the reader to better grasp the exceptional
impact of the cultural contacts among Christians in the East. This volume
aims to be a useful tool by offering a synthesis of the research
investigations and methodological approaches on Eastern Christianity as a

Maxim Hermaniuk,
C.Ss.R., provide a captivating glimpse into the public and
behind-the-scenes work of this Council Father. Hermaniuk was a graduate
of the Catholic University of Louvain, and taught for a number of years
in Belgium in the study houses of the Redemptorist order before being
named the first Metropolitan of the Ukrainian (Eastern) Catholics in
Canada. Hermaniuk was by far the most active of all the Ukrainian
Catholic bishops at the Council. Much of his work was carried out
through his membership in the Preconciliar Theological Commission and in
the influential Secretariat for Christian Unity. Hermaniuk's activities
centred on his proposal to establish an Apostolic College, as well as
his call to nullify the anathemas of 1054 between the East and West. He
was a strong advocate of ecumenical dialogue with other Christians,
particularly with the Eastern Orthodox churches. His work also included
the promotion of dialogue with other faiths. In reference to the
Ukrainian Catholic Church, which was at the time severely persecuted in
the Soviet Union, one sees his affirmations of the particularity and
dignity of his Church, his promotion of religious liberty, and his
condemnations of religious and political oppression. These diaries also
reveal how the Ukrainian Catholic bishops responded to the pastoral
needs of their faithful - in liturgy, catechesis, education, mission and
ecclesial governance - and the call to renewal made by the Council.
Finally, the diaries are unique since they are one of the very few
accounts of the Council by an Eastern Catholic Council Father. | Aggiungi al Carrello |
